Coin, Token and Banknote Auctions, 28-9 September 2005
A continuing strong international demand for all types of coins, trade tokens and banknotes meant that Dix Noonan Webb's latest auction, staged in three parts on 28 and 29 September, was the company's best ever. Over the two days 288 successful buyers spent a total of £1,228,350 (£1,412,603 including buyer's premium) on no less than 2,292 lots, consigned by 94 vendors.
The first day's catalogue was given over entirely to British and world coins which, in a phased dispersal over seven hours, grossed £1,000,545 (£1,150,627). First under the hammer was the collection of Celtic coins formed by Yorkshireman Tony Abramson, which met with a slightly mixed reception in realising £13,435 (£15,450); his best coin, a 'Sussex lyre' type silver unit (lot 18) needed £600 (£690) to take it home. The same vendor's small collection of Henry VI groats fared rather better, at £3,605 (£4,146).
Activity in the room picked up with the offering of the Tood collection of sovereigns, a group which included several notable rarities and totalled £66,500 (£76,475). Top of the pile was the Sharps Pixley 1916 Ottawa coin (lot 218), claimed by a North American mail bidder for £12,500 (£14,375). Noble Investments paid £8,400 (£9,660) for a very rare 1828 (lot 176), while a UK private collector secured the very elusive 1819 coin, which had been pierced, for £7,200 (£8,280); it had previously changed hands for £170 in 1970 and £4,100 in 1999. Another prize was an 1863 coin with the die number 827 on the truncation of the bust (lot 205), of which only six specimens are believed known; this needed £6,500 (£7,475), as opposed to the £3,500 it cost when last sold in 1988. A slightly impaired 1908 Ottawa proof (lot 21 3) changed hands for £2,600 (£2,990), as did a rare 1 841 (lot 1 88), while an extremely fine 1 825 laureate head type (lot 171) commanded £2,400 (£2,760). The Tood group was followed by a complimentary series of Victorian sovereigns collected by die number, which sold largely at around the pre-sale estimates and racked up £16,110 (£18,527).
Session 2 opened with hammered silver crowns from the Warwick collection, an old-time group largely put together in the 1960s and 1970s, which the market snapped up for £126,430 (£145,395). Easily the most important piece was an attractive example of the very first Commonwealth crown, 1 649, with wire-line inner circle on obverse (lot 350). With a distinguished pedigree including the names of Brigg, Paget, Carter and F.R. Cooper, it matched the upper pre-sale estimate of £10,000 (£1 1,500) and was secured by Daniel Fearon, bidding on behalf of a North American client. Cratifyingly, the same buyer also took home its companion, another 1649 with an even lengthier provenance (lot 349), for £5,400 (£6,210); a 1651 from the Lockett collection (lot 351) was more of a surprise at £6,500 (£7,475). Of the earlier pieces, a telephone bidder secured an attractively toned Edward VI coin of 1 551 (lot 282) for £4,500 (£5,1 75), the best of the James I issues, a second coinage piece previously in the Dear collection (lot 302) made £3,400 (£3,910) and a UK dealer secured a 1643 Oxford pound attributed to Rawlins (lot 333) for £4,300 (£4,945).
There were several surprises in the seminal 1 50-lot offering of the collection of patterns, proofs and coining trials formed by Joanna Tansley, for which buyers paid £39,800 (£45,770). A trial for the reverse of the Edward VIII shilling, 1937 (lot 399) was deemed the most valuable piece and doubled the estimate at £2,300 (£2,645), but arguably a greater rarity, a trial for the reverse of a 1926 halfcrown by the little known F. Derwent Wood (lot 386), brought £1,850 (£2,128); its buyer also garnered a similar threepence by the same artist (lot 390) for £1,200 (£1,380). A most interesting Edward VII trial penny of 1902 conceived by the Kings Norton Metal Co (lot 384), hammered down for £800 (£920), was one of several pieces acquired on commission by the Royal Mint Museum; another was a silver trial farthing of 1 933, almost certainly the only known specimen (lot 397), bid to £750 (£863). The series of so-called VIP proofs were greatly in demand, with a 1947 penny (lot 401) rising to the incredible figure of £1,400 (£1,610); a 1934 penny (lot 391) needed £620 (£713), a 1958 halfcrown (lot 406) £470 (£541) and a 1932 halfpenny (lot 394) £440 (£506). In contrast, prices for the later decimal patterns and associated minting pieces were more in line with estimates and there were several good buys to be had. The historic trial currency sets of 1 962 formerly owned by Professor John Rimington (lots 417-18) changed hands for £500 (£575) and £450 (£518) respectively, a group of 1963 uniface trials by Christopher Ironside (lot 422) needed £1,750 (£2,013) and a genuine double-headed halfpenny of 1971 (lot 450), £260 (£299). An interesting trial for the reverse of the Isle of Man 50-pence of 1971 (lot 452), bought on eBay for £25 less than a year ago, attracted a lot of interest and was secured by a Manx commission bidder for £500 (£575).
The bulk of the auction was devoted to British coins from other properties, featuring a good range of type coins in both the hammered and milled series, which collectively sold for a total of £500,505 (£575,581). The hammered got off to a flying start, when a room bidder fought off telephone competition to win a penny of the Hiberno-Norse Viking ruler Olaf Sihtricsson (lot 517), found by a metal detectorist near Beverley, East Yorkshire, last year, for £9,000 (£10,350). Other detectorist finds included a penny of Matilda tentatively attributed to the previously unknown mint of Monmouth (lot 538), sold within estimate at £3,100 (£3,565), and a penny of King Eadmund of the Norwich mint (lot 519), acquired for £1,900 (£2,185).
Hammered gold, of which there were no less than 69 pieces in the auction, fared extremely well and was widely dispersed. A lengthy bidding battle in the room preceded the sale of an attractive but not outstanding Elizabeth I fine sovereign (lot 633), which finished up costing £9,800 (£1 1,270). Mark Rasmussen paid £6,800 (£7,820) for a Norwich half-ryal of Edward IV (lot 575), a great rarity; a companion ryal of the same mint (lot 574) went to the same buyer for £3,400 (£3,910). An American telephone bidder bid £6,800 (£7,820) for a James I rose ryal (lot 657) and £6,200 (£7,130) for a Commonwealth unite, 1651, virtually as struck (lot 691); another coin to cross the Atlantic was an Elizabeth I pound (lot 637) for a mid-estimate £3,200 (£3,680).

Important British and World Banknotes
David L. Spence
David Lee Spence, M.D., was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, he served in the US Navy, first at the Naval Research Institute in Endocrinology and then aboard the USS Jason based in Sasabo, Japan, during the Korean War. Following discharge from the service he toured the Orient before returning to his native city. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh and went on to found the first community mental health clinic in the area at Beaver, Pennsylvania.
Subsequently, David founded the Staunton Clinic at Sewickley Valley Hospital, where he served as Medical Director and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry for 30 years. During this time he also served as consulting psychiatrist at both Harmarville Rehabilitation Center and Woodville State Hospital, while maintaining a private psychiatric practice which included serving as an expert witness in personal injury cases. A long term member of the board of directors of Compunetics, Inc., a Pittsburgh technology company, David was the proud parent of three sons and a daughter, and the proud grandfather of nine. He was an avid traveller, active in numerous hobbies and ventures besides being a member of the Sphinx Society, a Pittsburgh numismatic group, for over 30 years. In all these pursuits he was supported and encouraged by his companion and wife, Mary Anne.
David appears to have become seriously interested in numismatics in the mid-1960s. Like some before him and many since, the basis for his introduction to 18th century British trade tokens as a collecting field lay with the contemporary American colonial series. He put together a superb and select group of colonial coins, tokens and paper money, auctioned by Stack's in New York on 15 March 1975; a list of the American-related 'Conder' tokens in it was appended to the catalogue for Part I (DNW 8 October 2004).
The nucleus of the British token collection was provided by what was touted by the original vendor, James Fawcett, of Waltham, Massachusetts, as a 'rare and maybe unique opportunity'. Back in 1967 it certainly was: no less than 3,349 tokens put together between 1945 and 1965, along with literature on the subject, were to be offered as a group for $10,000. Fawcett's 15-page circular, detailing his estimated values for groups of tokens, was apparenlly sent to known interested parties in the membership of the Token and Medal Society (TAMS) and Fawcett was in negotiation with a collector in California when he received a telephone call from Charles L. Litman erf Pittsburgh. Having ascertained that the collection was still available at a reduced price of $8,500 for a quick sale Litman didn't waste any time, driving up to Boston with his wife
and completing the deal on 23 February 1967, less than a week later.
Litman, who ran the Coin Exchange on Sixth street, Pittsburgh and was a long-time customer of Monica Bussell (1906-74) at the London dealers B.A. Seaby Ltd (as indeed was Fawcett), appears to have retained the collection intact and passed it to David Spence within a short space of time. From the provenances quoted in the succeeding pages one can readily see the pre-eminence of the Fawcett/Litman group, many of the pieces in it emanating from the somewhat unheralded but remarkable collection formed by the London coin dealer Frederick William Lincoln (1857-1928) and dispersed anonymously by his son in February 1936 after the Lincoln business ceased trading. The majority of Lincoln's tokens were acquired in the later years of the 19th century from the dealers James FHenry (who issued his own tokens in 1879), Baldwin and Spink, and in the provinces, James Daniels, James Verity and William Weight. A handful of pieces can be traced to the famous Thomas Lloyd collection, a holding of over 4,400 pieces auctioned as one lot in May 1878, and one token in the previous auction was originally owned by Samuel Birchall (+1 81 4), the Leeds issuer (lots 1 834-5), part of whose collection was sold in 1 869. Other acquisitions by Fawcett from the London market include a significant number of pieces from the important collection formed by the publisher William Longman (1882-1967) and auctioned in 1958, and tokens that had been in one of the collections of the enthusiastic London numismatist Albert Jan (1899-1967).
After acquiring the Fawcett/Litman group, David put together a wants list and circulated it to dealers on both sides of the Atlantic. Over the next twenty or so years he made a few select additions, mostly from Baldwin and Spink, but which also included a group of rarities from the collection of Dr Robert J. Hudson of Pittsburgh, who incidentally issued his own parking tokens! During the late 1980s and through most of the 1990s the collection remained static, but towards the close of the last decade David's interests were rekindled with the dispersal of the huge Jim Noble collection in Melbourne in July 1998, which brought a number of rarities that had eluded him in earlier years back on the market, and the offering of the top quality collection formed by Wayne Anderson (1941-99) in April 2000, just four years after Anderson had founded the thriving Conder Token Collectors Club. David's most recent purchases, before his untimely death on 13 October 2003, were from Alan Davisson and Richard Gladdle.
This is the most significant collection of tokens to have been offered by auction in London for 20 years, with a broad appeal to collectors and county specialists alike. The following 462 lots represent Part II and are numbered in sequence to Part I. The balance and the numismatic library are to be auctioned in June 2006- P.J.P-M.
Cataloguer's note
As with Part I, the collection has been catalogued by location within each county group as defined by Dalton and Hamer, rather than by denomination. In this way pieces relative to each other and specific to a particular locality are easier to find. Tokens issued by named individuals are listed alphabetically, preceding those struck by manufacturers for specious gain and any 'county series'. The opportunity has been taken to record the weight and die-axis of each token, information which might not only help pinpoint pieces from the collection in future years should original tickets and envelopes be discarded, but is also increasingly relevant to those who study the series in depth. Details of many of the issuers remain obscure, but some of the information given in the footnotes has not been published in a numismatic context before.
This portion of the collection includes a significant number of pieces of a medallic nature, particularly under the 'Middlesex' grouping assigned to them by Dalton and Hamer perhaps, as David Dykes has postulated, because of pressure from their publishers. Largely the work of the manufacturers of the tokens, it was perhaps for this reason that they were deemed worthy of publication by the contemporary authors of the time, in particular James Conder (1 761-1 823) and Charles Pye, in whose footsteps James Atkins (1 837-1 91 0), Richard Dalton (1854-1922) and Samuel Hamer (1859-1930) have trod. Devotees of D & H have continued to pursue them, as indeed did many of those early collectors, but because they are not tokens per se they have been separated in this catalogue from the main group of London-based issues.

By the early 1 790s he was making £4,000 profit per annum and in 1 793 he sold a quarter of the business to his assistant, Robert Allen. In 1 794 he opened a large shop at 32 Finsbury place south, Finsbury square, known as the 'Temple of the Muses', from which his tokens were issued. Lackington, by then the largest second-hand bookseller of the day, retired from the business in 1 798. The rarity of the 'pattern' is evidenced from the apparent demand for collectors for the Taylor copy in lot 1404 (Doty, S'/VC March 1986, pp. 39-40, and CTQ June 1999, pp.20-1)

DH 252a only illustrated. Joseph Askins (b.1 771), a one-legged potato planter from Walsall, used his peg leg for drilling holes to drop the seed potatoes in. He developed an astonishingly convincing voice-throwing technique which he would demonstrate at local shows and pageants. In 1 796, word of his talents reached London and he was engaged for two weeks at Sadler's Wells Theatre as The Man With One Leg and Two Voices. The show was a phenomenal success, and in the course of a two-year run Askins single-handedly established ventriloquism as mainstream entertainment

The series of mail coach tokens publicise the claims of John Palmer (1 742-181 8) to try and regain his post as Comptroller General, from which he was dismissed in 1793. Palmer introduced the first mail coaches in England in August 1784, from London to Bath and Bristol. It is possible that the sponsors of the earlier mail coach tokens, which can be reasonably dated to late 1 794 and early 1 795, were the engraver James Fittler, ARA (1 758-1 835), who engraved a famous painting of the Bath Mail, and the city merchant Antoine Francis Haldimand (1 741-1 81 7), founder of the banking house of Morris, Prevost & Co (Dykes, BN] 2000, pp.97-100)

First only illustrated. Spence's countermarked pieces, advancing his plan for agrarian reform, are believed to have first appeared sometime after he sold his token dies to Peter Skidmore (Thompson, BNJ 1969, p . 1 55). By the early 1800s Spence had established himself as the unofficial leader of those radicals who advocated revolution. He did not believe in a centralized radical body, but rather encouraged the formation of small groups that could meet in local public houses. At night men walked the streets and chalked on the walls slogans such as Spence s Plan and Full Bellies' and 'The Land is the People's Farm’. In 1800 and 1801 the authorities believed that Spence and his followers were responsible for bread riots in London, but they did not have enough evidence to arrest them
